Le Vendée Globe est à ce jour la seule course à la voile autour du monde, en solitaire, sans escale et sans assistance. L'événement s’est inscrit dans l'esprit du Golden Globe qui en 1968 initia la première circumnavigation en solitaire, sans escale et par les trois caps (Bonne Espérance, Leeuwin et Horn).
