About Tim Squirrell
Hi, I'm Tim. I'm an academic at the University of Edinburgh where I work on understanding why people decide to believe other people on the internet (no, I didn't think when I pitched my PhD in late 2014 that it would be as, uh, "relevant" and "impactful" as it now seems to be). I don't know about you, but I've always found the way that academic writing and research presents itself to be pretty alienating. I was the first person in my family to go to university, and now as I'm trying to finish up my thesis (and become Dr. Squirrell, which is honestly a ludicrous name) I'm still struck by how little of what I've learned has ever made its way out to a broader audience. And that's not because people aren't interested; it's because the content and ideas are presented in ways that are designed, either deliberately or inadvertently, to make most people feel like it's not for them.
