About Zooplankton Ecology Group, ICM
The Marine Zooplankton Ecology Group (Grup d’Ecologia del Zooplàncton Marí, GEZM) is part of the Department of Marine Biology and Oceanography of the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM, CSIC), Barcelona. The research field of the group includes the study of the role of zooplankton (from micro- to macrozooplankton) in pelagic marine ecosystems, from taxonomy to aspects related to the physical-biological interactions in marine systems.
Since the 80’s the group has made seminal studies on the feeding mechanisms and swimming behavior and physiology of copepods, and from the 90’s has been one of the world leading groups in the study of the effects of small-scale turbulence on the structure and functioning of plankton communities, and on the role of microzooplankton in marine pelagic ecosystems.
The members of the group at present are: Miquel Alcaraz, Enric Saiz, Albert Calbet, Kaiene Griffell, Anna Arias, Manuel Olivares, Claudia Traboni and Guilherme Ferreira.
